Residential Irrigation Meter Information

Residential Irrigation Meter Information

The Irrigation meter is an option for homes with an irrigation system. The Irrigation meter would separate your inside and outside water use saving you the cost of sewer ($5.00/unit).

  • The cost of a 5/8” Irrigation meter is $436.00
  • A plumbing permit also has to be pulled through our Building Services Department located at our Administration Offices, 6201 W Michigan Ave., by the homeowner or licensed plumber at the cost of $75.00.
  • When purchasing the meter (at our Administrative Offices, 6201 W Michigan Ave., Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM), you will then receive a meter horn/template. This horn has to be installed by the homeowner or a licensed plumber.

Once the meter template is installed, the following steps have to be taken:

  1. Call the Department of Building Services at (734) 822-3125 within 72 hours of installation to schedule a plumbing inspection (permit # will be needed). Inspections are only done Monday through Friday between the hours of 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM (we do not guarantee times). This inspection has to be approved before you can move on to the next step. The 2003 Michigan Plumbing Code, Section 312.9.2 and the 2003 Michigan Residential Code, Section P2608.4 require all backflow prevention devices be certified by a third-party certification agency. Annual inspections shall be made of all backflow prevention assemblies and air gaps to determine whether they are operable.
  2. Once your plumbing inspection is complete, call the Utilities Department at (734) 822-3105 to schedule a meter installation (our technician will install the actual meter). Meter installations are done Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 AM and 2:00 PM.

All the above listed steps have to be completed within 15 business days from the date the meter is purchased. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact the Utilities Department at (734) 822-3105.
