When is a Certification of Appropriateness required? Prior to any work affecting the exterior appearance of a resource (i.e. principle structure, out-building, landscape element, fence or sign) within a historic district, a permit shall be obtained through the Township Building Department. In addition to the Application for a Building Permit, an Application for "Certification of Appropriateness" (CoA) must also be completed submitted and reviewed by the Historic District Commission.
The CoA is only required for work within the historic district and only for work affecting the exterior appearance of the resource. Exterior work not visible from the street will still require a CoA.
