PUBLIC NOTICE
MICHIGAN DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENT, GREAT LAKES, AND ENERGY
WATER WITHDRAWAL PERMIT APPLICATION PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) uses public comment periods to get community input on pending permit applications before making a decision.

There is a public comment period until January 10, 2022, for a water withdrawal permit application for:

Applicant: Pittsfield Charter Township, 6201 West Michigan Avenue, Ann Arbor, MI 48108

Proposal: Pump up to 10 million gallons of water per day for temporary construction dewatering. The water would be withdrawn from shallow wells to lower the groundwater level to allow for construction and installation of sewer utilities for wastewater system improvements. The water will be immediately discharged to local surface water drains.

Location: Near the US-23 and US-12 interchange, Pittsfield Township. Approximate latitude and longitude coordinates are 42.2013°, -83.6725°.

Application documents: www.michigan.gov/documents/egle/egle-wrd-wateruse-PittsfieldTwp-Part327-permit-application_741683_7.pdf

Permit considerations: New water withdrawals over 2 million gallons per day must obtain a permit from EGLE under Part 327, Great Lakes Preservation, of the Michigan Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act, 1994 PA 451, as amended. The permitting criteria are:

• All water withdrawn, except for any portion that is a consumptive use, is returned to the source watershed.

• No adverse resource impacts are caused.

• No violation of private or public water rights occurs.

• The water use is reasonable under Michigan common law principles.

• Compliance with water conservation measures.

• Compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal laws and international agreements.
